NeON photographers are graduates of a citywide photography workshop. Photographers receive professional photography training in classes designed to introduce participants to the history of photography, technical skills, and the art of visual storytelling.
The NeON Photography workshops are a paid opportunity offered through the Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) that prepare participants to work as photographers. NeON Photography graduates have been hired as event photographers by NYC Mayor’s Office, NYC Department of Probation, Carnegie Hall events, NeON Sports, Park Avenue Pianos, the tennis legend John McEnroe, and more.

The stories participants share through their photographs are displayed in pop-up gallery exhibitions and digital portfolios. At the conclusion of the citywide workshop series, the participants’ work will be published in a photography book and shared with an international audience. The workshops were modeled after Seeing for Ourselves’ previous photography workshop series for residents of New York public housing, which resulted in the 2015 powerHouse book publication, Project Lives: New York Residents of Public Housing Photograph Their World.
